Navajo rugs

Traditionally named after the region where they were woven, Navajo rugs are woven by both men and women weavers. The rugs guaranteed for their authenticity, are produced by the Navajo people from the Four Corners area in the US. Known for more than 150 years, weaving blankets and rugs has been an important source of income for the members of the Navajo community.

Bringing to the world the finest and the most delicate and sophisticated of pre-mechanical woven textile, the Navajo weavers are truly the makers of an art which is exclusive and just one of its kind on the planet. Not an easy task, which anyone can accomplish, the weaving of rugs is an art which entails a whole lot of artistry the weaving requires a long time and every single step starting from preparation, spinning and dyeing the wool requires careful participation and work. While the authentic rugs are woven only from pure wool the ones made for tourist and selling purposes are made out of cotton wefts.

The Navajo rugs are represented according to the different trading posts as Teec Nos Pos, Wide Ruins, Ganado, Klagetoh, Two Grey Hills, Red Mesa, Crystal and Chinle. Also, designs like large Navajo floor rugs and Navajo runners are an important part of the crop of these rugs.

Some rug designs illustrating an inner meaning for the person who weaves them, but the designs they carry are insignificant and hold no symbolic meaning. The Navajo rug designs truly date back the introduction of the fine merino sheep by the Spanish people in the weaving scenario.

The most beautiful of all weaving made by the Navajo weavers, is the “Two Grey hills Rugs” named after the Two Grey Hills area in New Mexico. Mostly made out of the wool from natural sheep, the weavers create rugs depicting complex patterns of triangles and diamonds, with shades of colors like grey and brown which truly characterize the weaving from the Two Grey hills.

The Navajo weavers with their outstanding job has truly revived the look of the early Germantown and weaving from Eye Dazzler. The colors and complex designs along with the wild design pattern truly make each rug a real masterpiece in itself. As time changed, the weavers have now starting experimenting with the traditional style of weaving by combining regional styles and making designs which encompass a rug in another rug designs mainly.

So, whatever be the new design but the Navajo rugs will always remain as a traditional art form from the people and weavers of the Navajo community like a gift of art they have given to the whole world, which is truly one of its kind and incomparable in its uniqueness and great designs.
